Tutoring

What is Tutoring?

BYU Tutoring Services offers free volunteer peer-to-peer tutoring for classes taught at BYU. Tutors help reinforce concepts covered in class and assist students in developing essential learning skills. All tutors have achieved a B grade or higher in classes they tutor and have been oriented on essential tutoring skills.

Frequently Asked Questions:

There are no tutors available for the class I need. What should I do?

We are always getting new tutors, so keep checking back on our website. When you submit a request through the website, we can reach out to the appropriate departments and recruit new tutors. If you urgently need a tutor, please email us directly and we will do our best to accommodate you.

How can I become a tutor?

Submit an application at tutoring.byu.edu. You will need to attend an orientation session as well. Most orientation sessions are held over Zoom. You can find information about when and where our orientation sessions are held at tutoring.byu.edu/orientation. Don't worry about marking your attendance, just show up! Please plan about 30 minutes for your orientation.

I can't see my online classes on my schedule to sign up for a tutor. What do I do?

We are aware of this shortcoming of the website. It will hopefully be fixed in a future update, but for now please email us and we will try to match you with a tutor.

How do I get involved?

1) Go to tutoring.byu.edu and fill out a quick application!

2) Attend a 30-minute orientation on Zoom. You may contact one of the program directors to set up a time.

Contact the program directors by email at tutoring@byu.edu with any questions!

Volunteer Commitment: Tutors commit to helping students for 1-3 hours a week.

Please complete this mandatory 20 minute child protection training before you begin working with this program.

Experiences

This semester I finally recognized how the Lord has blessed me because of my service. It doesn't make much sense but I've been strengthened in my resolve to be righteous and I've gotten better grades as I've served more (even with more credits). I know that the Lord is very happy when He sees us reach out to aid our brothers and sisters.

-Jason Anderson

This semester, I've had several students, and even parents of students, say, "You have no idea how much this has helped me." Helping struggling students receive the help they need to have a successful experience here is amazing and that’s why I serve.

-Andrew Earl

I love having scheduled service hours in my week. I've told a lot of my friends about Y-Serve tutoring and some of them say, "Well, I don't have time for that". I have loved MAKING time for tutoring, even when weeks are really busy. The sacrifice to serve has blessed my life.

-Katie McGuire

I have grown to love teaching. I'm currently working with a girl who really struggles in chemistry and just decided to withdraw from the class. I care for her and want her to succeed and had the impression that she needs help with testing strategies to help with her test anxiety. It was so fulfilling to be able to help her and be the support she needed.

-Aiden Mourik

I was able to tutor someone for almost the entire semester last semester and it was always really rewarding to see the change during one of our sessions to not quite understanding a concept to totally getting it and applying it on their own.
-Anonymous

It's amazing to see peoples' faces light up when they finally understand a concept. Recently I was tutoring an intro biology class, and I drew out a big overview of the central dogma. The tutee being able to see the big picture made him understand it a lot more and it was cool to see that happen.
