Service Learning Courses

The Center offers three student development classes during Fall and Winter semesters, and one during Spring term. Each class meets once a week and carries one credit.

 

StDev 290: Learning through Service: Theory and Application

During Fall and Winter Semesters, this once-a-week class is held Mondays (Section 1) and Wednesdays (Section 2) from 5:00 – 5:50 pm. During Spring Term it is held on Wednesdays from 5:00 - 6:40 pm. This course provides students the opportunity to learn about service practice, motivation for service, service philosophies and theories, the fourth aim of a BYU education, the power of reflection in service, personal/skill development, and learning through service. StDev 132: Foundations of Effective Tutoring and Mentoring—Level One

Wednesdays from 5:00-6:40 pm during 1st and 2nd blocks of Fall and Winter semesters. This course teaches basic tutoring skills. For more information, contact Becky Smoot: 2330 WSC, 801-422-4681, rebecca_smoot@byu.edu.

StDev 133: Foundations of Effective Tutoring and Mentoring--Level Two

Mondays from 5:00 - 6:40 pm only during the 2nd block of Fall and Winter semesters. Students in this class learn how to empower other students with the skills and confidence needed to succeed academically. Note: Level Two can be taken before Level One.
