Service Recognition

Our mission is to provide every student with a meaningful service opportunity. We seek to instill in the heart and mind a desire to give lifelong service.

BYU Service Recognition is offered to all BYU students. This requires taking the Learning Through Service class, performing 100 hours of community service, and devising a capstone project which benefits a community service program or agency. To enroll in this award program, contact the Operations Supervisor and the Center for Service and Learning.

Learning Through Service: Theory and Application

Learning Through Service is a 1-credit class offered by the Center or Service and Learning during fall and winter semesters. This course provides an excellent opportunity for students, particularly those in leadership positions, to learn about:
  • Service
  • Motivation for service
  • Service philosophies and theories
  • The fourth aim of a BYU education
  • The power of reflection in service
  • Personal and skill development
Complete 100 hours of service
Half of the required 100 hours will need to be done thorugh the capstone project (see below). The other 50 hours can be done within the Center for Service and Learning's programs or in the community.
Capstone Project
The capstone project is designed to present students with an opportunity to implement what they have learned in their coursework. Students will need to design and execute a project that will further the aims for BYU and the Center for Service and Learning. This project must provide service experience consisting of at least 50 direct volunteer service hours. Capstone projects must be sustainable, fill a need in the community or the Center for Service and Learning, and connect the course work of the student to the service performed.
Portfolio
The portfolio is designed to present students with an opportunity to evaluate, reflect, and present what they have learned from their coursework, capstone project, and service experiences. You should think of this portfolio as an opportunity to bring attention to and educate people about an important issue and your solutions.
